Women of Tomorrow Miami Herald Essay Contest

The Women of Tomorrow Mentor & Scholarship Program has partnered with The Miami Herald and WalMart to offer Women of Tomorrow Mentees the opportunity to win wonderful prizes and have their essay printed in The Miami Herald.

The contest is open to all grades and is designed to improve writing skills and encourage students to follow current events.
One prize will be awarded per grade.

Deadline to submit Final Essay is Friday, March 26, 2010.

• Mentees will be given a list of six (6) topics from which they must select at least four (4) and must use The Miami Herald to compose one (1) page (approximately 250 words) essay responses to selected topics.

• Mentees MUST complete four (4) out of six (6) essays to be considered for final prize. WOT asks Mentors to be responsible for verifying that interested Mentees are completing monthly essays.

• Students (aided by School Coordinators and/or Mentors) will then select one (1) essay to be submitted to the Contest Committee for consideration.

• Students may use a paper copy of the Miami Herald or access the digital Miami Herald at http://www.miamiherald.com/digitalwot

Topic Prompts

♦ Women in Technology:

In recent years, there is increasing interest in encouraging young women to get involved in math and science, as well as increasing their awareness of opportunities in various technological fields. Why do you think it’s important for women to become more involved in technological fields? Find an article that involves women in technology and discuss how it may be used to support your belief.

♦ Women in Business:

Women have been making their mark on the business world for decades. Find an article that involves a woman or group of women in the business field and discuss her/their effect on the business world. Consider the path she/they took toward success. Are there any qualities or skills that you plan on emulating in the future? Explain.

♦ Women Making a Difference in the Community:

Whether it is donating service, money or your time to a needed cause, there are many ways to make a difference to ones community. Find an article highlighting a woman making a difference in her community and describe how and why her actions are positively impacting her community. Use her example as inspiration for your own plans for volunteerism and explain how you plan on making a difference in your community.

♦Women and Politics:

Choose an article that addresses a current local, state or federal issue relevant to women being argued in America today. Explain the issue and its components: basic premise, the pro argument and the con argument. Examine the issue closer and present your views on the subject.

♦ Women in the Arts:

Some people live their lives searching for creative outlets to express their thoughts, feelings and beliefs to others. Find an article that features a woman making a creative impact in her community through art. Describe the artistic medium (dance, song, painting, drawing, writing, fashion design, etc) represented in the article, the artists’ motivation and goals, and how the art is being received by audiences or society. Do you agree or disagree with what the artist is attempting to achieve or portray? Explain.

♦ Women and Global Issues:

The world today faces numerous pressing issues that affect people in our community as well as across the globe, including: abject poverty, war, illegal immigration, global warming or human trafficking. Choose an article that presents a global issue and describe how it is positively and/or negatively affecting women globally. Examine how this issue is being addressed in the global sense and whether you believe these solutions will be successful in the long run. Explain.
