THE NBC UNIVERSAL FOUNDATION IN SOUTH FLORIDA AWARDS $100,000 IN GRANTS TO SUPPORT SECONDARY EDUCATION
More than $600,000 Directed to Education over Five Years
MIAMI, FL – August 5, 2010 – As part of NBC Universal’s ongoing commitment to improving public secondary education in underserved communities, WTVJ NBC Miami and WSCV Telemundo 51 presented $100,000 in grants to four South Florida non-profits on August 4th .
Funded by the NBC Universal Foundation, the company’s philanthropic organization, NBC Miami and Telemundo 51 have been able to provide over $600,000 in grants to several different organizations over the last five years.
Nationally, the foundation announced that it will direct a total of $800,000 in grants to non-profits in six cities across the U.S this year. In its fifth year, the funding will support 26 non-profit organizations in Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. that have demonstrated their commitment to improving educational opportunities for 6th through 12th grade students. Since the program’s inception, more than $6M has been directed to education.
At the grants presentation event held at the WTVJ / WSCV facility in Miramar, the four non-profits being funded this year were welcomed by Ardyth Diercks, President and General Manager of NBC Miami, and by Manuel Martinez, President and General Manager of Telemundo 51 who issued this joint statement : “We are committed to improving the high school graduation rate in South Florida and to helping so many young people stay focused on aspiring to a brighter future, and the best way to do it is by working with the terrific organizations we are funding today because they are true experts in motivating and inspiring students at risk to stay in school and achieving academic and career success.”
